At Heritage Museums & Gardens in historic Sandwich Village, the Carousel Cafe provides Museum patrons with fast & friendly service. The Casual Gourmet is also the exclusive caterer for weddings & events at Heritage, one of Cape Cod's most treasured landmarks and home to the famous Dexter Rhododendrons. With more than 4,000 members and 100,000 yearly visitors, the Museum celebrates American art, history, industry and horticulture.
The Classic Cape Cod Wedding
Are you looking for the classic Cape Cod wedding location? Look no further than Heritage Museums & Gardens. The Museum is hosting wedding ceremonies and receptions on 100 acres of award-winning grounds. Evening receptions for up to 150 guest may be held in the J.K. Lillly III Automobile Museum, or choose one of many outdoor locations for a tented event. The Casual Gourmet is the exclusive caterer to all events at the Museums.
Heritage Museums & Gardens was once the former Charles O. Dexter estate. It was here on the 76 acres of gently rolling hills next to Upper Shawme Pond that Mr. Dexter, in his retirement years between 1921 and 1943, transformed an unproductive farm into a showplace for the colorful, distinctive rhododendrons that bear his name. At age 59, a doctor told Dexter he had only a short time to live; however, he lived for twenty-two more years. During this interval he developed between 5,000 and 10,000 seedlings annually. He planted many in the fields or open woods bordering Shawme Pond, and gave thousands of plantings away to private gardens, nurseries and public botanical collections.
Other items of horticultural interest include: a Holly Dell and Daylily, Herb, Hosta and Heather Gardens. Approximately 900 daylilies bloom from mid-July through the first week in August. Also to be found here are more than a thousand varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers, many of them labeled. Heritage Museums & Gardens has added a Labyrinth! This stunning addition to the landscape was designed by Marty Cain, who visited Heritage in June of 2002. One of the best-known labyrinth designers in North America, Cain has to date created over 95 permanent labyrinths and numerous temporary installations in the USA and Canada, from Prince Edward's Island, Canada to Kauai, Hawaii. She is a founding member of The Labyrinth Society, an international organization of labyrinth builders and keepers. Unlike the classic maze, which has numerous traps and false turns, a sacred, healing labyrinth pattern has but a single, roundabout path leading to its center. Much like life, just when it seems you have the goal in hand; the path spins you back toward your starting point. When you least expect it, you arrive at the center.
